POEM SHARE: Children's poets from across the globe presenting their favorite poems for Poetry Month and beyond!
For today's POEM SHARE, Lee Wardlaw reads "First Word," a poem about an important milestone: the moment a child speaks their first word! This poem is filled with onomatopoeia, or words that sound like their meaning. See if you can name some of the onomatopoetic words as you listen.
Lee is the author of over 30 children's books. This poem comes from her collection My Book of Firsts: Poems Celebrating a Baby's Milestones, illustrated by Bruno Brogna. Is there a special baby in your life? Maybe a brother, sister, cousin, or neighbor? I bet they'd love to hear you read some of the poems in this book to them!
Do you remember your first word? If not, ask an adult in your life if they remember. Try writing a poem about that word. Or about your favorite word. Be sure to add lots of onomatopoeia. This will make the poem fun to read out loud!
Happy poetry reading and writing, everyone!
