Poem Share: Margarita Engle Presents an Excerpt from SINGING WITH ELEPHANTS

Poem SharePOEM SHARE: Children's poets from across the globe presenting their favorite poems for Poetry Month and beyond!

Poetry can be whatever you want it to be! That's the message behind this poem by Margarita Engle, Cuban-American author and former national Young People's Poet Laureate. Margarita's poem also explores the wonder of onomatopoeia, or words that imitate the sounds they describe. After listening to this Poem Share, try making a list of onomatopoetic words and using them in your own poem.

The poem Margarita shares is from her novel-in-verse, Singing with Elephants, a story about the friendship between a young girl and poet Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American winner of a Nobel Prize in Literature. This wonderful book, which explores the power of words to help children discover where they belong, is available May 2022.
